The Silent History of the Deaf - The Exhibition

From 18 June to 6 October 2019

EXPO PANTHEONFrom Antiquity to the Renaissance and the 17th century... Plato, Montaigne and Descartes all shared their observations on the use of sign language as a means of communication. As of 1170, signing was accepted by the Pope for weddings. A 13th century manuscript provides evidence of shared vocabularies between monks following a rule of silence and deaf people living in silence... The exhibition at the Panthéon provides a brief introduction to the history of deafness and sign language, its periods of development to provide access to education and the moments that saw a regression of the rights of deaf people. It presents a set of historic documents, as well as profiles of the men and women who have played a key role in the recognition of the deaf as citizens: Abbé de l’Epée who advocated access to education for all, Madeleine Le Mansois who petitioned the Parlement of Paris to marry the husband of her choosing, Etienne de Fay, the deaf architect and scholar, Ferdinand Berthier who created the world’s first deaf association in Paris, Emmanuelle Laborit, an artist awarded the Molière Award in live French theatre, an activist and director of the IVT theatre, among others.
